Peer support in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment is undergoing significant changes in Kentucky. With the passage of House Bill 505 in 2024, all peer support specialists providing billable services at SUD treatment centers under KRS 222 must be registered with the Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors by January 1, 2026. After that date, no other peer support credential will be valid for billing purposes.

While HB 505 establishes a standardized credentialing process, there were concerns about specific provisions in the bill. To address these, HB 580 was introduced to refine and improve aspects of the legislation. Unfortunately, HB 580 did not pass, leaving some unresolved issues.
